When you resign from a category it disappears from your dashboard. Unless you are also listed for a category higher up in the hierarchy, resigning one will leave you unable to edit it. For instance, if you were listed in Arts/Music and Arts/Music/Bands_and_Artists then you could resign the latter category, and still be able to edit it.
