Dear Nan O'Zilla,

I'm a new editor in Recreation/Pets/Wombats. I created a category yesterday called "homepages." But now after reading the guidelines I realize that this needs to be changed. How do I change the name of this subcategory? Should I delete all the sites, delete the category and start all over again?

Help,
Luvwombats

Dear editor Luvwombats,

Never fear, there is a way to change category names without emptying the category and starting all over again! You should avoid moving or deleting the sites and deleting the old category. The category can be renamed using the catmv (category move) function which preserves internal and external crosslinks to the category.

Here is what you need to do.

  • Go to the Editor Forums http://dmoz.org/forum/index.cgi and find the forum that corresponds to the ODP section in which you edit. In your case you should visit the Recreation forum. There are many other helpful forums that you may want to stop and visit if you haven't already such as the New Editors forum and the General forum.
  • Look for an active thread with a title that looks something like this: Rename/Delete/Sort Requests Part 2. Make sure to read the instructions at the top of the thread. If you are renaming a category as part of a reorganization, always make sure to discuss the changes with fellow editors.
  • Make a request in this thread to rename the category or categories in question. Your request should look something like:
  • Please rename:
    http://dmoz.org/editors/editcat.cgi?cat=Recreation/Pets/Wombats/homepages
    to
    Recreation/Pets/Wombats/Homepages
  • The category will then be renamed by one of the many friendly editall or catmv editors.
Hope this helps. You can send further questions to me -- Nan O'Zilla
