Here are the latest bite-sized new items from the ODP's restaurant guide project. Recent server outages on dmoz.org caused stalwart editors looking to feed their editing habit to skip on over to http://chefmoz.org/. Quite a few people hadn't visited in a while and reacquainted themselves with the new features. The ups and downs of the other directory as well as a fair bit of extraneous content was chronicled in the enigmatically titled Social Forum thread "The most recent thing you put in your mouth" A while later it was payback time, and the editor side of ChefMoz went down for a couple of days. Monday morning, November 27, staff editor Autumn posted her well known "Fixed" message in the DMoz thread chronicling this issue, "Where has Chefmoz gone?" The structure of the directory's UK portion has been under discussion recently in the General forum thread, "UNITED KINGDOM". The debate discusses the issue of whether to subdivide by region or by county, and how to make navigation easier for the user. Two major issues facing ChefMoz are increasing exposure and attracting new editors. Both are a requirement in building critical mass and making the directory a serious player in the field of online eating guides. The bulk restaurant adds in the US and the smaller, more recent ones in Ireland and in the UK have helped fill out the directory quite a bit. However, all areas of the guide still need lots of help from interested editors. Want to try editing in a different directory? Want to be active in building something from the ground up? ChefMoz needs your help! Whether you're new to the dining guide or want to become active after an extended absence, you're welcome to participate. And no, you don't need to eat out twice a week or be an expert in exotic cooking in order to make yourself very useful. A lot of the editing activities are very similar to what you're already familiar with; accepting submissions from the public, editing descriptions, and moving listings to correct locations. DMoz editors can simply go to their hometown and follow the instructions in the "become an editor" screen. Please note that in almost all cases, new editors should apply for one city as their first area of activity. If you've not been active in a while, you may need to e-mail a ChefMoz meta-editor in order to be re-activated. See the editall/meta/staff list on the editor dashboard for contact information. Questions, suggestions, and comments are welcome in the ChefMoz forum or directly to me via editor feedback from my profile or at bcwine@chefmozed.org. Thanks to editor imajes99, editors now have access to a free e-mail redirect, web space for directory-related stuff, and a place to find resources like the unofficial FAQ. Please note that if you have already set up an account, you may need to update your information due changes in servers. See this thread for details: http://chefmoz.org/forum/threaddisplay.cgi?t=Forum1/HTML/000048.html As a last item, ChefMoz is celebrating its one year anniversary as the foodie offspring of DMoz. See the inaugural thread from last December in the DMoz General forum where Chris Tolles kicked things off: http://dmoz.org/forum/threaddisplay.cgi?t=Forum1/HTML/002112.html . Happy birthday, Chef Moz! Statistics as of the end of November, 2000:
