Dear Nan,

I'm a little bit worried. I think my edits are disappearing. I know I've been reviewing and moving sites around, but none of those edits are showing up on my "edit counter" logs. What is happening? Is there some sort of glitch?

-Disappearing in Detroit

Dear Disappearing,

Well I took a look at the logs for the categories where you edit as well as your editing logs. In spite of an apparent lack of activity showing in those logs, I think I may know the answer to this mystery. Edits and moves in the unreviewed queue do not currently show up in category or individual editor logs. The logs only keep track of when you publish a site from unreviewed to a category or when you move a site from listed to unreviewed.

Keep editing and eventually you'll see your edit counts grow! Hope this helps.

Dear Nan,

I took a look at one of the categories I edit yesterday and noticed that some of the titles are in Italics and others are Bold. I edited these URLs, but they are still showing up italicized and bolded. What does this mean? Did I do something wrong?

-Bold and Italicized

Dear Bold Editor,

These bolded and italicized titles are actually a new feature recently implemented by staff engineer cptginyu. A bold title means that the site appears in Test/See_Editor_Notes. [See my July column for more information about this category.] An italicized title means that the site appears somewhere else in the directory. While excessive listings of a single URL is highly discouraged, there are some instances when double listings are appropriate. For instance, double listing a site once in a subject category and again in Regional is okay. A bold/italicized title is not a reason to delete a URL, but you may want to evaluate the site(s) to make sure they are appropriately listed. If you have a question about a particular site, bring it up in the forums.

You can read more about this feature in the the following thread: http://dmoz.org/forum/threaddisplay.cgi?t=Forum21/HTML/001879.html. Rpfuller has also collected various threads discussing this feature in his bookmarks. -Nan

Dear Nan,

I recently applied for my hometown category, Regional/North_America/Oregon/Localities/S/Somewhere but haven't heard anything back. What happened?

-Waiting in Somewhere

Dear Somewhere,

There are several steps you can take to both ensure a smoother category request process and also to check on the status of your request. Before applying for a new category, take a look at "Applying for new categories" (DMOZ Monthly, May 2000) for some insight into the process. Additional guidance and advice is provided in the forum thread: Category Application Standards

Once you've applied, the best course of action is to wait. If there are special circumstances surrounding your request, for instance if a senior or higher editor suggested that you apply for the category, you may want to ask them to post a note in the Special Circumstance Requests thread. The current version of this thread can be found at http://dmoz.org/forum/threaddisplay.cgi?t=Forum24/HTML/000518.html

Acceptances and rejects will show up in your category request log. If you are uncertain about the status of your request, you can check there to see if it has approved or rejected. You can access your category request log from the "Find an Editor" link on the right hand side of the editor dashboard.

In the event your request is rejected, you will usually receive a feedback offering an explanation. If your request is approved, you may or may not receive a feedback, but may suddenly notice a new category on your dashboard. Hope this helps.
