Games is chugging along at a nice stately pace. Fresh attention from
editall lissa has spurred a number of re-orgs in the Card Games and
Trading Cards categories. A mini-catbust in the latter category is
progressing nicely with most of the unreviewed cleared so far.
Meanwhile, a number of industrious editors including wrathchild, chaosfish, wyldturky, and chphan have been going crazy building new game categories in their bookmarks; keep them coming guys! With Robozilla due for a new stomp across the directory, meta knine has been working hard in Test/Robozilla/Reds/Games clearing out the old back-log of red sites -- new helpers are always welcome.
During the last few months re-orgs have included: the renaming of Games/Internet to Games/Online; the moving of online browser based games from Games/Online to Games/Video_Games; and the creation and clarification (we think!) of the multiplayer and massive multiplayer online categories for this popular new genre of video games.
While there don't seem to be any large projects looming in the near future for Games, with new editors joining all the time you just never know what ideas will come up. In the mean time building categories for the multitude of new games arriving each month is still a priority.

There hasn't been a huge amount going on in our patch, although there have been several editor promotions meaning that we now have a fine set of editors at the UK level. England is close to hitting 85,000 sites, meaning that it has nearly doubled in size over the past two years, and the UK category as a whole is close to 160,000 sites.
There have been reorganisations of the Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Education and Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Society_and_Culture/Disability (originally called Disabled) categories, along with Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Business_and_Economy/Financial_Services. Changes in the Legal Services category are already under discussion.
Finally, after the new Regional template was published a few weeks ago, work is under way to produce a companion template in British English (as opposed to American English), which is what is used in the UK category, as well as several other countries. Computer (Computers) has two new top level editors: fleig and werth. mromppel was promoted to full privileges in Software after only one month of greenbusting, and is now busy reorganising the cat. The listings of software development companies in Programmieren (Programming) have been cleaned and completely rewritten according to the guidelines. And busskamp has cleaned lots of greens in Programmieren/Internet/. (werth)
Freizeit (Recreation) has a new top level editor: osiria, who immediately jumped at all the greens there. Before that, we created, with her help, the new category Outdoor (Outdoors) to match the English structure and to provide a home for many troublesome links. Minor restructuring work was done in Handarbeiten (Handcrafts), hopefully letting us mark off Kunsthandwerk (Crafts), and in Modellbau (Models) as being finished in the next few days. A large effort was also made by the editors from Motorrad (Motorcycles) and Haustiere (Pets). (albinfo)
Gesellschaft (Society) is still the third-largest topical category with more then 20,000 listings. jlangowski has reorganised the categories related to Rechtsextremismus (Right-Wing Extremism), Rassismus (Racism), and Nationalsozialismus (Nazism). morgenstern has created Gewalt und Mißbrauch (Violence and Abuse); presroi and flinki have started a very necessary clean-up in Drogen (Drugs) and Online-Shops/Freizeit/Drogen (Shopping/.../Drugs), and rainbo and tschecht have taken care of Persönliche Homepages (Personal Homepages) and doubled the number of listings. Gesundheit (Health) is now, after the long-discussed move of Wissenschaft/Medizin (Science/Medicine) to Gesundheit/Medizin (Health/Medicine), very close to the English category. Once again lots of thanks to those editors who took care of some hundred broken altlangs, @links and relcats. The greens have disappeared almost completely - thanks to our greenbusters warumauchnicht, friendly, and birgit4 in Fitness and Schönheit (Beauty). The category has now more then 10,000 links and less then 100 greens. (gloecknerd)
In Kultur (Arts) the new top level editor jazzntango along with chris2001 initiated a very necessary reorg of Bildende_Kunst: the cat was subdivided by topic, one site categories for single artists dismantled, and the number of greens in the Artists Alphabar reduced (with a lot of help from nagra and byrresheim). Kunsthandwerk (Crafts) and Kunstgeschichte (Art History) - formerly placed in Business and Science - were moved to Kultur. Newbie tine is busy in Theater and Schauspieler (Actors and Actresses). Always very active are grma in Musik and knut, who was recently made Editall. And there are lots of other unnamed editors who have helped add 6000 sites to Kultur since January. (jazzntango)
Online-Shops (Shopping) has a new toplevel-editor, martinanied. A lot of reorgs have taken place, with valuable contributions from fkld, mfc, birgit4, and petrasonnenschein. The categories Essen und Trinken (georgdlg), Musik (mromppel, grma) Gesundheit (jazzntango, warumauchnicht), Freizeit (osiria) and Bekleidung (rafaela) have found enthusiastic editors, most of them specialists in their fields, who work across top level borders. Nor do we forget all the editors working in small subcategories, who'll contribute a lot to reaching the mark of 10,000 listings soon. 2003 is a good year for Online-Shops. (martinanied)
Spiele (Games) was established only 9 months ago, in January 2003. It was built up after long planning and thorough discussion, mainly by merging Computer/Spiele (Computers/Games) and Freizeit/Spiele (Recreation/Games). What we aimed for with this reorganisation was to bring World/Deutsch more in line with the English hierarchy. It took quite some time and effort to find appropriate solutions for categories like Spielzeug (Toys) or some sports games. Eventually, we were able to sort out all these issues and reach a consensus. Today, Spiele consists of approximately 3200 sites, maintained by 37 listed editors. (tkarcher)
In Sport (Sports) we have reached nearly 19,000 sites, and it's growing and growing. To give you an idea: at the beginning of 2003, Sports was proud to have 15,000 sites and a few months later we celebrated 18,000 sites. New top level editors are quax11 and birgit4; other very active and creative editors like technoman2 are helping to create and develope this category. Nor can we forget rjfox who is our Number One Sportsman and is always trying to find new sports all over the world. (birgit4)
Regional has easily exceeded 100,000 sites and is now approaching 150,000. In many country categories, the development of a regional taxonomy has made progress. The size of numerous country or even state categories is comparable to World/Deutsch top level categories. rentier and rl66 have joined the team of top level editors. Among the most active editors have been martinanied, nachtfalke and teleangel. (rl66)
The editors in Wirtschaft (Business) are succeeding in changing the focus to "B2B" sites, and in reaching an alignment with the English top level category. We are now working towards the 30,000 mark, and were able to welcome two new top level editors: tomparis and martinanied. And there are numerous other editors working to create the best German language directory for business sites. (carstenrun)
In Wissen (Reference) knut and jazztango have enlarged the @link-collection in Biografien (Biography). And vieselmeier has created Volkshochschulen and Politische Bildung (Civics Education). (vieselmeier)
In Wissenschaft we continued the process of structural adjustment to Science. A very important reorg was the moving of Wissenschaft/Medizin (Science/Medicine) to Gesundheit/Medizin (Health/Medicine), after intensive analysis and long debates. Other recent developments: ikw has improved Geographie (Geography) and added some essential areas: both Human and Physical Geography. And GIS found a more appropriate home in Geoscience than Earth Science. amarok has created Erfindungen und Innovationen (Invention and Innovation). Flora und Fauna (Flora and Fauna) is under construction, according to the English model - special thanks to karinw, susjak and chris2001. And tiergarten has organized Zoologische Gärten (Zoos and Aquariums) by topic. (tomparis)
Adult: Led by top level editors olri, martinanied, cavalcanti and kpn1401, we are proceeding with the reorgs. Especially in the Regional part there's still a lot of work to do. The editors are looking forward to crossing the 3000 mark this year. (kpn1401)

Computer hat mit fleig und werth zwei neue Top-Level-Editoren. mromppel hat sich innerhalb von einem Monat vom Greenbuster zum "vollwertigen" Editor in Software hochgearbeitet und ist zur Zeit fleissig dabei, diese zu reorganisieren. In Programmieren sind die zahlreichen Einträge unter Dienstleistungen komplett überarbeitet und die Beschreibungen den Richtlinien angepasst worden. Außerdem hat busskamp die zahlreichen Grünen in Programmieren/Internet/ abgearbeitet. (werth)
In Freizeit wurde osiria neue Topleveleditorin, und sie stürzte sich sogleich auf die vielen Grünen. Zuvor schon wurde mit ihrer Hilfe die Kategorie Outdoor angelegt, um die Struktur an Top anzugleichen und für viele Problemfälle ein Zuhause zu finden. Andere kleinere Umbauten betrafen die Kategorien Handarbeiten (klarere Abgrenzung zu Kunsthandwerk) und Modellbau, der hoffentlich auch demnächst abgeschlossen sein dürfte. Gesundheit ist durch die im Forum umfassend diskutierte Verschiebung von Wissenschaft/Medizin nach Gesundheit/Medizin der englischen Kategorie weitestgehend angenähert und umstrukturiert worden. An dieser Stelle sei noch einmal allen Editoren gedankt, die beim Flicken von einigen hundert zerbrochener Altlangs, @links und Relcats geholfen haben. Die Grünen sind in vielen Kategorien abgearbeitet - dabei waren insbesondere unsere Greenbuster warumauchnicht und friendly sowie birgit4 in Fitness und Schönheit sehr aktiv. In Kultur wurde von dem neuen Topleveleditor jazzntango und chris2001 die lange überfällige Reorganisation von Bildende_Kunst in Angriff genommen: die Kategorie wurde thematisch unterteilt, Eine-Site-Kategorien für einzelne Künstler wurden aufgelöst, die Grünen in der Künstler-Alphabar reduziert (dabei haben nagra und byrresheim fleißig geholfen). Weiter wurden die Kategorien Kunsthandwerk und Kunstgeschichte nach Kultur geholt, die zuvor unter Wirtschaft bzw. Wissenschaft lagen. Die neue Editorin tine ist sehr fleißig in den Bereichen Theater und Schauspieler. Unverändert aktiv sind grma für Musik sowie knut, der inzwischen Editall ist. Und es gibt noch viele Ungenannte, die dazu beitrugen, dass Kultur im laufenden Jahr rund 6000 neue Sites hinzubekommen hat. (jazzntango)
Online-Shops hat eine neue Topleveleditorin bekommen: martinanied. In vielen Bereichen wurden Neustrukturierungen vorgenommen, an denen sich die Editoren fkld, mfc, birgit4, petrasonnenschein mit voller Hingabe ihren Kategorien widmeten. Die Kategorien Essen und Trinken (georgdlg), Musik (mromppel, grma) Gesundheit (jazzntango, warumauchnicht), Freizeit (osiria) sowie Bekleidung (rafaela) haben sehr engagierte Editoren gefunden - die meisten von ihnen sind Spezialisten für ihr Thema und arbeiten über Toplevelgrenzen hinweg. Nicht zu vergessen die vielen Editoren in den kleinen Unterkategorien, die einen erheblichen Anteil daran haben, dass in nächster Zeit wohl die Marke von 10000 Einträgen erreicht wird. Alles in allem kann man sagen, 2003 ist ein gutes Jahr für Online-Shops. (martinanied)
Spiele wurde erst im Januar 2003 neu eingerichtet. Die Kategorie entstand nach langer Planung und Diskussion im Wesentlichen durch die Zusammenlegung von Computer/Spiele und Freizeit/Spiele. Ziel der Reorganisation war es, der englischen Struktur näher zu kommen. Schwierigkeiten bereiteten unter anderem die Einordnung des Spielzeugs, aber auch die Abgrenzung einzelner Spiele zur Sport-Kategorie. Letztendlich wurde aber ein guter Kompromiss gefunden. Spiele umfasst mittlerweile knapp 3200 Einträge und wird von 37 gelisteten Editoren gepflegt. (tkarcher)
In Sport haben wir beinahe 19.000 Seiten und die Kategorie wächst und wächst. Nur zum Vergleich: Anfang 2003 freute Sport sich über 15.000 Seiten und nur wenige Monate später feierten wir die 18.000. Neue Topleveleditoren sind quax11 und birgit4, aber auch andere sehr aktive und kreative Editoren wie technoman2 helfen beim Anbauen und Weiterentwickeln der Kategorie. Nicht zu vergessen rjfox, unser Sportler Nr. 1, der ständig in der ganzen Welt nach weiteren Sportarten sucht. (birgit4)
Regional hat die 100.000er-Marke mit Leichtigkeit durchstoßen und nähert sich Eintrag Nummer 150.000. In zahlreichen Länderkategorien wurde der Ausbau der Regionalstruktur vorangetrieben. Die Größe diverser Länder- und auch Bundesländerkategorien ist mit derjenigen der Top-Level-Kategorien von World/Deutsch vergleichbar. Neue Top-Level-Editoren sind rentier und rl66. Einige der besonders aktiven Editoren sind martinanied, nachtfalke und teleangel.(rl66)
Die Editoren von Wirtschaft haben es weitgehend geschafft, den Focus auf "Seiten für die Wirtschaft" zu ändern, und sind recht weit mit der Angleichung an Business. Wir nähern uns der 30,000er Marke, und konnten zwei neue Toplevel Editoren begrüßen: tomparis and martinanied.Und es gibt immer mehr andere Editoren, die gemeinsam daran arbeiten, das beste deutschspachige Wirtschaftsverzeichnis zu erstellen.(carstenrun)
In Wissen haben knut und jazztango die @Link-Sammlung in Biografien erheblich ausgebaut. Außerdem sind die Kategorien Volkshochschulen und Politische Bildung von vieselmeier neu erstellt worden. (vieselmeier)
Im Bereich Wissenschaft haben wir den Prozess der strukturellen Anpassung an Science weiter fortgesetzt. Insbesondere ist hier die Umsiedlung der Medizin nach World/Deutsch/Gesundheit hervorzuheben, die nach intensiver Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema vollzogen wurde. Weitere Entwicklungen der letzten Monate: ikw hat Geographie weiter ausgebaut und um einige wesentliche Bereiche, nämlich die Anthropogeographie und Physische Geographie, erweitert. Daneben ist das Thema GIS nunmehr "nach Hause" gekommen. amarok hat sich der Erfindungen_und_Innovationen angenommen und eine kleine Sammlung angelegt. Flora_und_Fauna wird entsprechend der Vorlage aus Top aufgebaut - ein besonderer Dank geht hierfür an karinw, susjak und chris2001. Und tiergarten hat die Zoologischen_Gärten thematisch organisieren. Adult: Unter der Leitung der Editoren olri, martinanied, cavalcanti und kpn1401 sind die Umstrukturierungsmaßnahmen fortgeführt worden. Insbesondere im regionalen Teil gibt es hier noch viel zu tun. Bookmarks has risen to an impressive 253,997 sites at the time of writing, thanks to the work of many editors, and despite the attempt to move some sites over to Test/Editors. Notable mention must go to rdkeating25, whose stirling efforts have added a wonderful 21,000 sites to this branch. Also, kudos to afsitalia, Bookmarks award nominee, for his addition of 6,100 sites.
There has been minimal discussion on reorganising things within Bookmarks, though a few threads of interest on the issue of moving categories out of Bookmarks.
Rumours are abound that some catmv editors have been making substantial changes in Bookmarks categories without discussion and consensus, though no firings have been forthcoming as yet. We'll bring you more information in the next issue if any becomes available.
